You know the methods now. So how do you actually start using one?
How to Start This Week?
In part one, we mapped the whole landscape: Waterfall and Agile, then Scrum, Kanban, Lean and the governance frameworks. If you missed it, read that first — it’s short, and it makes this part click.
Reading about methods changes nothing. Running one for two weeks changes everything. So here’s the smallest possible starting point, depending on where you sit.
If you’re freelance
● Build one board. Trello, Notion or Linear. Four columns: Inbox, This week, Doing, Done. Put every commitment on it, including admin and invoicing.
● Set your limit. Three cards maximum in “Doing”. When it’s full, finish something before starting anything new. This one rule does more than any app feature.
● Plan every Monday. Thirty minutes. Pull cards into “This week”, then commit to that list.
● Run your own retrospective every Friday. Fifteen minutes, three questions: what worked, what dragged, what will I change on Monday? Write the answers down.
● Deliver in slices. Show clients something real every week, even if it’s small. Clients who see progress stay calm, and calm clients pay on time.
If you’re employed in tech
● Learn your team’s real method, which is rarely the one written in the onboarding doc. Watch where decisions actually get made.
● Run a personal kanban alongside the team board. It costs nothing, and it makes your workload visible when you need to say “my plate is full”.
● Speak up in retrospectives. It’s the one meeting explicitly designed for your opinion. Bring one observation and one suggestion.
● Give estimates as ranges with reasons. “Roughly three days, and here’s what would make it five” builds far more trust than a confident single number.
● Volunteer to facilitate one ceremony. Running a single planning session teaches you more than any certification, and it gets noticed.
Where to learn without getting bored
● Scrum.org Open Assessments — free, unlimited, and genuinely addictive. Take the Scrum Open until you hit 100%.
● Scrum Card Game — a free online simulation where you feel a sprint going wrong instead of reading about it.
● Google Project Management Certificate on Coursera — the best return if you want something formal on your CV.
● Your own next project — still the best teacher available, and the only one that’s free.
Why does this matter? Because every method exists to answer three questions: what are we doing, in what order, and how do we know it’s done? You can answer those with a certification and an enterprise tool. You can also answer them with four columns and a Friday habit. Both work — and the second one starts today.
Because your projects deserve a system that carries them, not one that slows them down.
